Hamlet on NY RT 28 and the Esopus Creek, in the Town of Shandaken, Ulster County. Originally named Fox Hollow, but renamed in 1890 in honor of Dr. Orson M. Allaben of Margaretville. In the early years of the 19th century, the Ulster and Delaware Turnpike was built making travel through this remote area possible. In 1872, the Rondout and Oswego Railroad (later becoming the Ulster & Delaware Railroad) arrived making the area a tourist destination.
The New York City water system's Shandaken Tunnel has it's outlet here, raising the level of the Esopus Creek dramatically. Tubing and kayaking are popular activities below the portal.
